Abstract: Magnesium is actively used as a lightweight structural metal in the transport industry. Its use ensures lower fuel consumption, reduced CO2 emissions and thus a greener earth. This paper describes the multiple beneficial effects of nanoparticle addition to wrought magnesium based systems. Regarding mechanical properties, the effects are either: (a) enhanced ductility or (b) simultaneously enhanced strength and ductility of magnesium. Regarding material degradation, the beneficial effects include: (a) higher dry oxidation resistance and (b) higher salt water corrosion resistance. The results obtained so far clearly indicate the capability of nanoparticles to enhance the properties of wrought magnesium and its alloys in a way never seen before with micron length scale reinforcements. |
