Author: Michaela Bartušová

Abstract:

THE IMPORTANCE OF DELIBERATION FOR TEACHING OF SELF-ADVOCACY SKILLS OF PUPILS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN INCLUSIVE SCHOOL

Goal of this paper is to point out the importance of deliberation not only as a way of pupils’ participation in school life, but also as a support for inclusion in school environment. It could be assumed that through deliberation, self-advocacy abilities of pupils with intellectual disability can be developed. Through self-advocacy, individuals with help of facilitators develop their social and communication competencies. The process of deliberation then creates a space for reasoning and argumentation, which supports reflective thinking and mutual understanding of participants. The concept of deliberative democracy can considerably strengthen collaboration of integrated pupils and the rest of the class, and it can prepare children with intellectual disability for their future social and civil life. Equality and mutual respect as main requirements of deliberative technique support inclusion in education.
