Abstract: ORIENTATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF ATTENTION AS PART OF SCREENING FOR SCHOOL READINESS
Abstract: School maturity represents reaching a potential for further development, school readiness is defined as reaching the acceptable level of abilities and skills that are important for school adaptation and success at school. Assessment of school maturity or readiness is important so that children who do not reach the required standard are not exposed to excessive stress and have the opportunity to compensate for their limitations. To assess school maturity Kern’s test modified by J. Jirásek is used, which mainly measures the graphomotor skills. Given that the acceptable level of ability to manage one’s attention and behaviour is an important part of school maturity and readiness, it is advisable to add a simple attention test to the screening for school maturity. Results of the study confirm that the orientational test of attention might serve as a supplement to the traditional screening for school maturity. The advantage of the proposed method is the simplicity of processing and easy evaluation of the results. It will be necessary to standardise this method and confirm its psychometric properties.
