Author: A. Kručayová

Abstract:

Using Art for the Development of a Pupil’s Personality – The Concept of Music Education by Tatiana Ivanovna Smirnova

The concept of music education or musical instrument instruction of T. I. Smirnova presents innovative methodical principles and procedures focusing on a harmonic development of a pupil’s personality and realization of their creative capabilities. From the beginning the teaching is joined with the development of emotionality, creative and flexible thinking and shaping of aesthetic taste. Along with prompting the child to acquire work habits it is directed to the main goal – helping them to obtain the capability to study and expand one’s music repertory independently. In this concept, motivation appears as an effective way for guiding the pupil’s personality and influencing their needs and desires. It is based on the joint influence of music, dance, literature and realization of teaching principles such as dialogue communication and a story-like form of interaction. A model of active collaboration of the pupil, teacher and parents has been created being in itself an important factor determining the success of personality development and of the expansion of children’s professional skills.
The pedagogical principles and work methods described in the book Воспитание искусством или искусство воспитания. Беседа „Интерпретация“ [Education by Art or Art of Bringing Up – Performance], in original methodology of piano playing Свободное фортепиано [Freedom Piano], and in the complex of teaching materials of the Класс специального фортепиано. Интенсивный курс „Allegro“ [ALLEGRO. Intensive Course for Piano] represent in themselves a comprehensive teaching programme. Its priority is the principle of the so-called developing education, which includes the creation of safe environment for the child, a microclimate of creativeness and kindness at the lesson. Smirnova’s methodology of piano playing is very original, based on the intensification of the process of music education. Its basis is created by the principle of complex, paralelly running intensive development of musical aural skills, rhythmic feeling, ability to quickly read music, play by ear, transpose and improvise. Their mastering increases the effectiveness of education and at the same time secures a compact systemic approach to the process of teaching. Its aim is to master the piano playing without being bound to the music material, the so-called free music-making. The volume and variability of music materials, present in particular books of the ALLEGRO piano school, serve to accomplish the said intentions.
