Abstract: SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED CHILDREN AND THEIR PROMOTION IN VARIOUS FORMS OF EDUCATION
The review study points to the importance of systematic support and attention paid to the social and emotional development of intellectually gifted children and adolescents. It summarizes the available research findings supporting the hypothesis of giftedness as a protective or as a risk factor for social and emotional difficulties, noting the predominance of recent research evidence in favour of the assumption that gifted children are socially and emotionally adjusted at least as well as their peers. It examines the possible causes of the conflicting findings and opinions that have historically prevailed in this area. Last but not least, the study focuses on the issue of providing a suitable educational environment for the optimal social and emotional development of gifted children and points to the lack of research on this topic in and outside of Slovakia |
