Abstract: ADAPTATION OF PARENTS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC: DEVELOPMENT AND INITIAL VERIFICATION OF THE ŠARMS-12 SCALE
Abstract: The study presents a newly developed scale focused on adaptation of parents in times of emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Development of the scale was based on previous research that identified the most common difficulties that parents encountered during the pandemic and that required their adaptation. ŠARMS-12 is a 12-item scale that exhibits good psychometric properties. These were examined in a sample of 474 parents in Slovakia. The scale contains three subscales aimed at determining the degree of parental adaptation to social isolation, child education, and household and work. Scoring is possible both at the level of subscales as well as the whole scale. The degree of parental adaptation is related to perceived stress, parental stress, well-being and coronavirus anxiety, which supports the construct validity of the instrument. Adaptability was found to be related to gender, educational attainment and age of parents, as well as the number of children. The present study discusses the advantages and possible limitations of the scale.
