Abstract: BARRIERS TO ADJUSTMENT TO UNIVERSITY AMONG STUDENTS WITH ATTENTION AND LEARNING DISORDERS The aim of the study is to identify what circumstances make it difficult for students with attention and learning disorders to study at university. School functioning of pupils with attention and learning disorders is a long-term subject of interest for researchers. Less attention has been paid to the functioning of university students with these disorders. Students with neurotypical development usually overcome the common challenges associated with the nature of the university environment and the developmental period of young adulthood without serious difficulties. In the case of students with attention and learning disorders, these challenges can turn into barriers that prevent them from successfully studying and completing their studies. The paper briefly defines attention and learning disorders in adolescence and adulthood and further focuses on barriers to the adjustment of students with these disorders in the university environment. Based on a review of the literature, the authors identify two main groups of barriers: barriers at the individual level (such as cognitive specifics, relationship to oneself and social activities) and barriers associated with the physical and social environment of universities, i.e. external barriers. The mentioned phenomena make it more difficult for students to adjust to university. Their recognition can be helpful in planning more effective interventions or in further research in Slovak conditions. |
