Title: VÝCHOVNÉ ŠTÝLY V RODINE AKO PREDIKTOR OSOBNOSTNÝCH DIMENZIÍ VEĽKEJ PÄŤKY
Author: ROBERT TOMŠIK

Abstract: PARENTING STYLES IN THE FAMILY AS A PREDICTOR OF THE BIG FIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS
Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the predictive power of upbringing styles in relation to the Big Five personality traits. In total, 800 high school students (247 of them boys) aged 14 to 19 (AM = 15.58) were involved in the research. Two standardized instruments were used to examine the variables – DZSVR and NEO-FFI questionnaires. ANOVA and MGLM methods were primarily used for statistical analysis. The majority of respondents experienced an indifferent style of family upbringing (58.9 %), followed by an autocratic style of family upbringing (16.0 %), a liberal style of family upbringing (12.9 %) and a social-integrative style of family upbringing (12.3 %). Statistically significant group differences in personality traits were found. Respondents brought up with an indifferent style were characterized by low scores in all dimensions except neuroticism, in which they exhibited the highest average score. Respondents who experienced social-integrative and liberal style of parenting had a similar structure of the Big Five personality traits, with those brought up with a liberal style showing lower levels of neuroticism and higher levels of conscientiousness. Finally, respondents raised in an autocratic style were characterized by low extraversion and high neuroticism. Parenting styles significantly predicted all personality dimensions; the explained variance for individual dimensions ranged from 3.5 % to 13.6 %. Parenting styles explained a total of 18.3 % of the variance of personality dimensions.
