Abstract: EDUCATION OF PUPILS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN MAINSTREAM SCHOOLS – RISKS AND POSSIBILITIES OF RISK ELIMINATION Abstract: As part of the longitudinal monitoring of psychological development of integrated students with prelingual hearing impairment, the author has already noted in the past, in addition to positive factors, factors that appear to be risky for psychological development. The benefits of integrated education of pupils with severe hearing impairment include their broader academic abilities and, in cognitive development, especially the development of spoken language and communication competencies. Their weak or insufficient social inclusion among peers appears to be a problem. The author compiled diagnostic procedures to identify the level of social status of these pupils in regular schools. After confirming low social inclusion, she applied a program to improve mutual understanding and cooperation of pupils with hearing impairment and their hearing classmates. Mild positive effects of the program tended to persist even a year after its implementation. |
