| Abstract: LANGUAGE AND VIOLENCE – THREE FORMS OF VIOLENCE IN COMMUNICATION Abstract: The paper describes and analyses in detail three forms of violence in communication – ignoring, labelling and stigmatization. Each form is illustrated by examples from school practice. The results of the author’s recent research on linguistic violence at secondary schools are also mentioned. Three questions are answered for each of the mentioned forms of violence: What do we mean by this form of linguistic violence? The particular form is briefly defined based on its etymology. How is it used? Linguistic means and procedures for using the particular form are explained. Why does it work? The influence of the particular form of violence on the mental health is indicated. All three forms of communicative violence are damaging for the human need for recognition. The recipients are either completely neglected or their individuality is displaced by generalization – they are not seen as unique persons, but as part of a group chosen for them by someone else. Violence in communication can have serious consequences for the recipient, which the speakers are often not aware of. |
