Abstract: SCHOOL INTERVENTIONS TO SUPPORT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PUPILS’ MENTAL HEALTH: EXPERIENCES OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS Abstract: Domestic and foreign research studies indicate a worsening trend in well-being and mental health of children and adolescents. International organizations emphasize the need to address this issue in the school environment, either at the level of education and prevention, or at the level of providing professional services and psychological interventions. The authors conducted individual semi-structured interviews with eighteen school psychologists in elementary schools with the aim of finding out what interventions they provide to support well-being and mental health in schools. The responses were processed using the inductive qualitative content analysis. They identified three main categories and seven subcategories of activities that the participants mentioned as interventions: individual counselling and consultations for students, individual consultations for parents and teachers, relaxation techniques and sensory stimulation, comprehensive preventive/intervention programs, group educational and counselling activities, group experiential and communication activities and school-wide activities and campaigns. Interventions focused mainly on working with individuals and class groups. Indirect interventions aimed at parents and teachers, as well as community-wide, school-wide approaches, were less frequent. |
