Title: A TRANSLATION OF THE MULTIDIMENSIONAL AFFECT AND PAIN SURVEY (MAPS) FROM ENGLISH TO SLOVAK LANGUAGE
Author: Katarina CIRIAKOVA-VLACHOS, W. Crawford CLARK, Ralph N. WHARTON

Abstract: The purpose of this report is to introduce the Slovak language translation of The Multidimensional Affect and Pain Survey (MAPS), (Appendix A), which has been used to study a wide variety of patients. MAPS was developed to measure sensory, emotional, quality of life, and other aspects of the total pain experience. The 101 descriptors in the MAPS questionnaire are grouped in 30 subclusters within 3 superclusters: The Somatosensory Supercluster, contains 57 descriptors related to the sensory and perceptual qualities of pain, grouped into 17 subclusters; the Emotional Pain Supercluster has 26 descriptors of negative emotional qualities, grouped into 8 subclusters; and the Well-being Supercluster has 18 descriptors of positive affect and health, grouped into 5 subclusters. The MAPS questionnaire has been demonstrated to possess a number of advantages over the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ). For example, MAPS factors were found to be much more homogeneous, that is, related to only one of the Somatosensory pain, Emotional pain and Well-being superclusters. In contrast, the MPQ factors often were found to be a heterogeneous mixture of the major MPQ Sensory, Affective and Evaluative classes. Such mixed factors are difficult to interpret. In addition to presenting the translation into Slovak, studies which used translations of MAPS into Czech, Russian, Polish and Chinese to study cancer related and postoperative pain are also reviewed.
