Abstract: A Brief Survey of Historical Development of the Opinions on the Term “Music”
In principle all known definitions of music are determined by the point of view of the researcher and by other historical, cultural, geografical and socio-cultural aspects. Many explications of the essence of music may be found in the oldest mythological and theological statements on world, society and man. These statements are inseparable from philosophical systems, period aesthetic tracts or theoretical, educational and practical treatises. All musicological disciplines answer the question “What is music?” from their own viewpoint, however, it is mostly music philosophy which deals with the essence of music and principles of its existence and development in particular historical, cultural and geographical forms. While the music space is not constant and the borders between the musical and non-musical sound are flexible, music itself can be conceived as an open system, a system, which can comprehend not only the most progressive musical manifestations, but also early (pre-artistic) grades of the music development, European music (utilitarian, traditional as well as autonomous one), but also the music of ancient non-European cultures or music of native peoples.
